This isn't strictly a list of hobbies, but more of a broad strokes/general approach of steps to hopefully battle out of depression and change/improve your life:
Fix your appearance/hygiene
This may be really easy or it may be difficult depending on your level of depression, but step one is to get out of bed.
Better yet, make your bed. Let it become a daily practice that forces you out of bed, keeps your space a little more orderly, and discourages you from crawling right back in and messing that shit up.
Brush your teeth
Take a shower
Use a nice deodorant/cologne/perfume.
Clip your nails
Get a hair cut
etc... you probably know what's wrong with your appearance, so take the steps to fix it. You'll feel a little bit better about yourself.
Clean the space around you
Hopefully you made your bed. Now tidy up the rest of your space. Put those dirty clothes in to the laundry, fold/hang your clean clothes, do any dirty dishes, vacuum, etc... you'll feel that much better and breathe a little easier if the space around you is tidy and organized. Doing dishes is damn therapeutic, and it's easy. Just these simple steps can help reduce your stress.
Exercise
Exercising is one of the easiest and most proven ways to combat stress and/or depression, and there are a ton of ways to do it. There really aren't any excuses (with medical conditions or similar reasons being an exception, not the rule).
Can't afford a gym membership? Running is free. Download a c25k (couch-to-5k) app on your phone (plenty of free ones available) and get moving. Don't like running? Try swimming. Get going, and then find the related subreddits (seriously, there's /r/running[1] , /r/c25k[2] , etc.) and subscribe. Read the FAQs, ask questions, lurk just to remind yourself to do it.
Strength training is great too, and again doesn't require a gym membership. Do push-ups, crunches, squats, planks, burpees, dips, chinups, and other exercises between your CounterStrike matches or each episode as you binge through your Netflix content. Again, if you can't figure it out, find the subreddit (/r/bodyweightfitness[3] ) and go from there, they have great routines for beginners and beyond.
If weights are more your style and getting to the gym isn't a problem, there are plenty of great programs and resources - Starting Strength is a good one.
And beyond all of those, you have your actual hobbies that contribute to being active (again all with subreddits): biking, hiking, rock climbing, whatever. It doesn't matter, getting up and getting moving does. Maybe hardcore/r/parkour[4] , or /r/dancing[5] is more your style, and that's just as great!
Eat better
Eating healthy and having a better diet is well known to improve your mood. There are a ton of approaches to this, but I'll give you a simple break down:
Want to be more muscular? Do some strength training and eat more.
Want to be skinnier or lose weight? Eat less (and exercise, of course)
You may see different numbers or ideas but almost everyone agrees that diet/nutrition is more important to reaching your goals than the exercise you do, especially if you're trying to lose weight.
The best part? Diet/nutrition is easier than you think, and basically boils down to your calories in versus calories out.
You already know what's healthy and what isn't. Start thinking of food as fuel for your body. No more, no less. Cut out soda (soft drinks), juice, and only drink alcohol in moderation. Start reading nutrition labels, and you'll realize how easy it is to drink your calorie limits (or more) in a day. Stop eating potato chips and other sugary shit. If you're going to eat out, make healthy choices and substitute a salad or vegetables instead of the fries / potatoes.
It may help to track your choices/progress, use MyFitnessPal (web/mobile app) for this.
Make it a hobby and learn a useful skill like cooking. Prep your own meals so you know what is (or isn't) in them. Impress your family with some delicious dish you learned to make. Impress your friends with some homemade wings to eat during the football game, instead of that Pizza Hut bull shit. Impress your wife/girlfriend/Tinder dates with a bad ass breakfast omelette. Learn to feed yourself and others like an adult instead of living off of takeout or Ramen noodles.
Make your own choices and do your own research, reddit has plenty of options and support for this: /r/loseit[6] ,/r/keto[7] , /r/paleo[8] , /r/myfitnesspal[9] , /r/cooking[10] , etc.
Manage your money
Start making your money work for you instead of the other way around. Go to /r/personalfinance[11] and read. Figure out a budget, pay your bills on time, start chipping away at your debts, and stop buying pointless crap like Steam Sales (seriously how many of those 100 games in your library have you played for more than an hour?) or fast food every night (you're eating better, remember?). You don't have to be a /r/frugal_jerk[12] , but don't be wasteful either. Start building your credit and invest. Put more than 0.30 cents in to a savings account that accrues interest by depositing some of each check in there and do not touch that shit.
Find other ways to make some more money. If you've managed to start exercising but still haven't rode that bike in 10 years, sell it. It helps to free and tidy your space, while putting some cash in your pocket. Take the hobbies you're about to learn and profit if you can.
Get smart, and be knowledgeable
In case you missed it[13] , the question "what is just not attractive to you" came up on Reddit yesterday, a month ago, and some form of that question is asked just about every damn week. I'm not complaining, and that's not the point. One of the top comment chains is though, and it goes something like this one does every time, starting with:
/u/O_thats_clever[14]
Willful ignorance. It's one thing if someone just doesn't know, but is willing to learn. It's completely another when they don't care.
That's not you, at least not from this point on. Why? Because you're better than that and take the time to be a little smarter and a little more informed. How?
Read. Pick up as many books as you can get your hands on and read them. Make sure at least some of them are non-fiction and cover subjects like politics, economics, geography, religion, and whatever else may excite or interest you. Non-fiction is fine too, but it shouldn't just be entertaining but make you think a little bit too. 1984 by George Orwell is a work of fiction, but a good example of something you could (and should, even) read. 50 Shades of Grey is an example of fiction that is less worth reading, unless that's just what you're really in to.
Instead of spending the whole night on a Netflix binge or playing video games, try something new. Maybe you download a music editor and start mixing mash-up songs, or you learn how to use Photoshop so you can do cool shit in/r/photoshopbattles[15] or become the next variation of /u/SlickLogoGuy[16] (I bet that guy can turn his hobby in to some money, if he hasn't already). Take something you're interested in or want to learn, find a relevant subreddit and check the sidebar. Start a Wikipedia adventure, there's tons of knowledge there and you can get lost for hours looking through link after link, learning about everything from string theory to West African cuisine.
Instead of watching Twitch streams, or the latest pranks/fails/funny compilations on YouTube, watch TED talks. They will give you new ideas and give you shit to think/talk about.
Even if you can't peel yourself away from YouTube, there's better content. Can't think of or find anything? There areplaces[17] that can help.
Also, set your homepage to BBC, CNN, or whatever your preferred news outlet is. Don't already have a preferred news outlet? Pick one, and read it every damn day. You don't have to spend hours doing this, and you don't have to read every article. Just take 10-15 minutes of your time online and keep yourself informed of what's going on both around you and around the world. You'll be able to talk with someone the next time someone mentions the latest crisis. Form opinions, and you'll be able to answer the next person who asks how you feel about the election or if you fuck with the war.
Learn new skills
These can be anything from a new hobby, entertainment, a way to make some money in your free time, or even practical skills that could help you in different situations. Maybe you learn a new language, or take a class on CPR.
Use the internet and sites like WikiHow, eHow, LifeHacker, or various subreddits to take up new interests and learn skills like shuffling cards, building a fire, first aid, changing a tire, whistling, and other cool shit. Google is your friend for this, and you'll gain respect from the rest of your friends if you're skilled at these things when it's handy or needed, moreso than the person standing around without a damn clue as how to knot more than their own shoes.
Find yourself
It may sound cliche or like it's bull shit, but it's not.
Look in to meditation. Deal with your past and use outlets like /r/depression[18] or /r/advice[19] or whatever else to find a way to cope. Find your happy place.
Form opinions on everything. Define your own morals and values and do not deviate from them, ever. Take a spiritual journey by reading to decide on religion, or become agnostic, if you haven't figured this out for yourself already. You should be able to form and have an opinion on most major topics - just take some time throughout the day and think about it. Seriously, ask yourself "how does this make me feel?"
Push yourself physically (exercising, eating better) and mentally (reading, learning) to challenge and build yourself. Make sure to set goals - start small at first and go bigger from there. Then achieve them and accomplish things you can be proud of.

Radio
- KEXP[1] - Seattle based radio station which is a pretty good step between obscure and mainstream radio
- KCRW[2] - Flagship National Public Radio member station for Los Angeles and Southern California. Has been the first station to broadcast quite a few famous artists
- WFMU[3] - Has some very interesting shows depending on the DJ. However, it also has some very obscure and strange programming.
- Pitchfork[4] - A well known music review site. Has somewhat fallen out of favor, but it is undeniably one of the most powerful names in the world of music reviews.
- Sputnik[5] - Another popular music review site.
- Spotlistr[6] - Input a list of artists and get a Spotify playlist of similar artists. Works off lastFM's API and is one of my favorite apps
- Gnoosic[7] - Runs its own similarity database based off of questions answered by fellow visitors. Put in an artist and get suggestions. Rate your suggestions for other users
- to be added on..
- /r/listentothis[8] - Subreddit dedicated to discovering and sharing music. Strict moderation that ensures the quality of submissions.
- /r/RepublicOfMusic[9] - Like the above except it only allows songs released in the past three months
- CDBaby[10] - A digital distribution site. You find many new artists here and can find good artists pretty reliably by looking at their top sellers. Browsing their new releases can uncover hidden gems but also a lot of trash.
- Bandcamp[11] - Another digital distribution site. I would say most artists are trending towards this being their preferred release community. Again, lots of trash to wade through. This is where hipster review sites get their content from, except their reviewers are paid to wade through the muck.
- Take your favorite artists and look for interviews and biographies where they list their musical influences. Look for bands who have opened for them and bands who are signed onto the same label (often labels specialize in a certain type of music)
- Hit up your local bars on live music nights, look for shows that are playing locally. Getting involved in your local music scene can be very rewarding and a great way to find new music.
- If you have a favorite TV show and you're constantly wondering what song is playing during that scene, look it up using TuneFind[12] . Lots of TV shows have amazing soundtracks.
- lastFM[13] - There's a lot to say about Last.fm. You can scrobble to last.fm using Spotify. Doing so allows you to see historical listening data as well as allows last.fm to create a profile based on the artists in your library. They offer similar artist recommendations based off other users who liked the same artists.
- RateYourMusic[14] - A large community of music reviewers who rate releases and even individual tracks. Good to see a sort of aggregated review on releases and also to find obscure releases in genres you like. You can also follow tastemakers who like similar bands as you and let them do the work for you.
- reverbNation[15] - Find popular artists in your area or globally.
- HypeMachine[16] - Somewhat like Reddit for music. Aggregates content from music review blogs all in one place and gives a snapshot of trending artists in certain communities.
- 8tracks[17] - Somewhat lesser known playlist site. Generally smaller playlists but a lot of thought put into each track.
- 4chan's /mu/ - Share threads are always amazing. Unfortunately, it is also 4chan and in general not a place to hang out if you are easily offended.
Let's get one thing out of the way. There are gradations of rich. I see four major breaking points:
Worth $10mm-$30mm liquid (exclusive of value of primary residence). At this level, your needs are met. You can live very comfortably at a 4-star/5-star level. You can book a $2000 suite for a special occassion. You can fly first class internationally (sometimes). You have a very nice house, you can afford any healthcare you need, no emergency financial situation can destroy your life. But you are not "rich" in the way that money doesn't matter. You still have to be prudent and careful with most decisions unless you are on the upper end of this scale, where you truly are becoming insulated from personal financial stress. (Business stress exists at all levels). The banking world still doesn't classify you as 'ultra high net worth'
Net worth of $30mm-$100mm
At this point, you start playing with the big boys. You can fly private (though you normally charter a flight or own a jet fractionally through Net Jets or the like), You stay at 5 star hotels, you have multiple residences, you vacation in prime time (you rent a ski-in, ski-out villa in Aspen for Christmas week or go to Monaco for the grand Prix, or Canne for the Film Festival--for what its worth, rent on these places can run $5k-20k+ per NIGHT.), you run or have a ontrolling interest in a big company, you socialize with Conressmen, Senators and community leaders, and you are an extremely well respected member in any community outside the world's great cities. (In Beverly Hills, you are a minor player at $80 million. Unless you really throw your weight around and pay out the nose, you might not get a table at the city's hottest restaurant). You can buy any car you want. You have personal assistants and are starting to have 'people' that others have to talk to to get to you. You can travel ANYWHERE in any style. You can buy pretty much anything that normal people think of as 'rich people stuff'
$100mm-$1billion
I know its a wide range, but life doesn't change much when you go from being worth $200mm-$900mm. At this point, you have a private jet, multiple residences with staff, elite cars at each residence, ownership or significant control over a business/entity that most of the public has heard of, if its your thing, you can socialize with movie stars/politicians/rock stars/corporate elite/aristocracy. You might not get invite to every party, but you can go pretty much everywhere you want. You definitely have 'people' and staff. The world is full of 'yes men'. Your ability to buy things becomes an art. One of your vacation home may be a 5 bedroom villa on acreage in Cabo, but that's not impressive. You own a private island? Starting to be cool, but it depends on the island. You just had dinner with Senator X and Governor Y at your home? Cool. But your billionaire friend just had dinner with the President. You have a new Ferrari? Your friend thinks their handling sucks and has a classic, only-five-exist-in-the-world-type of car. Did I mention women? Because at this level, they are all over the place. Every event, most parties. The polo club. Ultra-hot, world class, smart women. Power and money are an aphrodisiac and you have it in spades. Anything thing you want from women at this point you will find a willing and beautiful partner. You might not emotionally connect, but damn, she's hot. One thing that gets rare at this level? friends and family that love you for who you are. They exist, but it is pretty damn hard to know which ones they are.
$1billion
I am going to exclude the $10b+ crowd, because they live a head-of-state life. But at $1b, life changes. You can buy anything. ANYTHING. In broad terms, this is what you can buy:
Access. You now can just ask your staff to contact anyone and you will get a call back. I have seen this first hand and it is mind-blowing the level of access and respect $1 billion+ gets you. In this case, I wanted to speak with a very well-known billionaire businessman (call him billionaire #1 for a project that interested billionaire #2. I mentioned that it would be good to talk to billionaire #1 and B2 told me that he didn't know him. But he called his assistant in. "Get me the xxxgolf club directory. Call B1 at home and tell him I want to talk to him." Within 60 minutes, we had a call back. I was in B1's home talking to him the next day. B2's opinion commanded that kind of respect from a peer. Mind blowing. The same is true with access to almost any Senator/Governor of a billionaires party (because in most cases, he is a significant donor). You meet on an occassional basis with heads-of-state and have real conversations with them. Which leads to
Influence. Yes, you can buy influence. As a billionaire, you have manyways to shape public policy and the public debate, and you use them. This is not in any evil way. the ones I know are passionate about ideas and are trying to do what they feel is best (just like you would). But they just had an hour with the Governor privately, or with the Secretary of Health, or the buy ads or lobbyists. The amount of influence you have can be heady.
Time. Yes, you can buy time. You literally never wait for anything. Travel? you fly private. Show up at the airport, sit down in the plane and the door closes and you take off in 2 minutes, and fly directly to where you are going. The plane waits for you. If you decide you want to leave at anytime, you drive (or take a helicopter to the airport and you leave. The pilots and stewardess are your employees. They do what you tell them to do. Dinner? Your driver drops you off at the front door and waits a few blocks away for however long you need. The best table is waiting for you. The celebrity chef has prepared a meal for you (because you give him so much catering business he wants you VERY happy) and he ensures service is impeccable. Golf? Your club is so exclusive there is always a tee time and no wait. Going to the Superbowl or Grammy's? You are whisked behind velvet ropes and escorted past any/all lines to the best seats in the house.
Experiences. Dream of it and you can have it. Want to play tennis with Pete Sampras (not him in particular, but that type of star)? Call his people. For a donation of $100k+ to his charity, you could probably play a match with him. Like Blink182? There is a price where they would simply come play at your private party. Love art? Your people could arrange for the curator of the Louvre to show you around and even show you masterpieces that have not been exhibited in years. Love Nascar? How about racing the top driver on a closed track? Love science? Have a dinner with Bill Nye and Neil dGT. Love politics? have Hillary Clinton come speak at a dinner for you and your friends, just pay her speaking fee. Your mind is the only limit to what is available. Because donations/fees get you anyone.
The same is true with stuff. You like pianos? How about owning one Mozart used to compose music on? This is the type of stuff you can do.
IMPACT. Your money can literally change the world and change lives. It is almost too much of a burden to think about. Clean water for a whole village forever? chump change. A dying child need a transplant? Hell...you could just build and fund a hospital and do it for a region.
RESPECT. The respect you get at this level is just over-the-top. You are THE MAN in almost every circle. Governors look up to you. Fortune 500 CEOs look up to you. Presidents and Kings look at you as a peer.
PERSPECTIVE. The wealthiest person I have spent time with makes about $400mm/year. i couldn't get my mind around that until I did this: OK--let's compare it with someone who makes $40,000/year. It is 10,000x more. Now let's look at prices the way he might. A new Lambo--$235,000 becaome $23.50. First class ticket internationally? $10,000 becomes $1. A full time executive level helper? $8,000/month becomes $0.80/month. A $10mm piece of art you love? $1000. Expensive, so you have to plan a bit. A suite at the best hotel in NYC $10,000/night is $1/night. A $50million home in the Hamptons? $5,000. There is literally nothing you can't buy except.
Love. Sorry to sound so trite, but it is nearly impossible to have a normal emotional relationship at this level. It is hard to sacrifice for another person when you are never asked to sacrifice ANYTHING. Money can solve all problems for someone, so you offer it, because there is so much else to do. Your time is SOOOO valuable that you ration it. And that makes you lose connections with people.

- CTRL+Up/Down arrow: In a code window, this shifts the window without moving your cursor. Love this one.
- ALT+Up/Down: Move line of code (this might be a part of Productivity Power Tools...I can't remember if it was integrated in VS2012, prior to that it's definitely PPT only though)
- CTRL+X: If you do this without highlighting anything, it will cut the entire line. Same applies to CTRL+C. 1.CTRL+SHIFT+V: Cycle through the clipboard ring. Again, I love this one. If you are moving parts of code to different places and don't want to switch back and forth, just copy each one individually, then use this to pull them up.
- CTRL+I: Incremental search. This is like a mini-find function. Press it and start typing, it will go to the next instance of what you are looking for. Press it again, and it goes to the next one. It's a little less "overhead" than CTRL+F, especially pre-2012.
- CTRL+K, C: Comment selected line(s)
- CTRL+K, U: Uncomment selected line(s)
- CTRL+ALT+L: Go to the solution explorer
- F4: Properties Window
- ALT+SHIFT+ENTER: Toggle Full Screen
- CTRL+ALT+X: Toolbox

- No Excuse List[25] - Includes sources for everything you can want. I included some more popular ones with brief write-ups below. Credit to /u/lix2333[26] .
- Reddit Resources[27] - Reddit's List of the best online education sources
- Khan Academy[28] - Educational organization and a website created by Bangladeshi-American educator Salman Khan, a graduate of MIT and Harvard Business School. The website supplies a free online collection of micro lectures stored on YouTube teaching mathematics, history, healthcare and medicine, finance, physics, chemistry, biology, astronomy, economics, cosmology, organic chemistry, American civics, art history, macroeconomics, microeconomics, and computer science.
- Ted Talks[29] - Talks that address a wide range of topics ("ideas worth spreading") within the research and practice of science and culture, often through storytelling. Many famous academics have given talks, and they are usually short and easy to digest.
- Coursera[30] - Coursera partners with various universities and makes a few of their courses available online free for a large audience. Founded by computer science professors, so again a heavy CS emphasis.
- Wolfram Alpha[31] - Online service that answers factual queries directly by computing the answer from structured data, rather than providing a list of documents or web pages that might contain the answer as a search engine might. Unbelievable what this thing can compute; you can ask it near anything and find an answer.
- Udacity[32] - Outgrowth of free computer science classes offered in 2011 through Stanford University. Plans to offer more, but concentrated on computer science for now.
- MIT OpenCourseWare[33] - Initiative of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to put all of the educational materials from its undergraduate- and graduate-level courses online, partly free and openly available to anyone, anywhere.
- Open Yale Courses[34] - Provides free and open access to a selection of introductory courses taught by distinguished teachers and scholars at Yale University.
- Codecademy[35] - Online interactive platform that offers free coding classes in programming languages like Python, JavaScript, and Ruby, as well as markup languages including HTML and CSS. Gives your points and "level ups" like a video game, which is why I enjoyed doing classes here. Not lecture-oriented either; usually just jump right into coding, which works best for those that have trouble paying attention.
- Team Treehouse[36] - Alternative to Codecademy which has video tutorials. EDIT: Been brought to my attention that Team Treehouse is not free, but I included it due to many comments. Nick Pettit, teaching team lead at Treehouse, created a 50% off discount code for redditors. Simply use 'REDDIT50'. Karma goes to Mr. Pettit[37] if you enjoyed or used this.
- Think Tutorial[38] - Database of simple, easy to follow tutorials covering all aspects of popular computing. Includes lots of easier, basic tasks for your every day questions or new users.
- Memrise[39] - Online learning tool that uses flashcards augmented with mnemonics—partly gathered through crowdsourcing—and the spacing effect to boost the speed and ease of learning. Several languages available to learn.
- Livemocha[40] - Commercial online language learning community boasting 12 million members which provides instructional materials in 38 languages and a platform for speakers to interact with and help each other learn new languages.
- edX[41] - Massive open online course platform founded by Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University to offer online university-level courses in a wide range of disciplines to a worldwide audience at no charge. Many other universities now take part in it, including Cal Berkeley. Differs from most of these by including "due dates" with assignments and grades.
- Education portal[42] - Free courses which allow you to pass exams to earn real college credit.
- uReddit[43] - Made by Redditors for other Redditors. Tons of different topics, varying from things like science and art to Starcraft strategy.
- iTunes U[44] - Podcasts from a variety of places including universities and colleges on various subjects.
- Stack Exchange[45] - Group of question and answer websites on topics in many different fields, each website covering a specific topic, where questions, answers, and users are subject to a reputation award process. Stack Overflow is used for programming, probably their most famous topic. Self-moderated with reputation similar to Reddit.
- Wikipedia[46] - Collaboratively edited, multilingual, free Internet encyclopedia. Much better source than most people give it credit for, and great for random learning whenever you need it. For those looking for more legit sources for papers and such, it is usually easy to jump to a Wikipedia page and grab some sources at the bottom.
Back to sane mode.
- Ninite[47] - Something I myself can personally recommend, its a safe download site with no toolbars and malware. Any software you need will be there, and I have discovered a lot of software there. (DELETED)
- Free Electronic Component Samples from Texas Instruments[48] - OP just had a $15 voltage regulator delivered for free. You need to create a free account, and then you get something like four free samples a month. This is incredibly useful for some harder to find parts. Plus they're good quality, as far as I know, and they ship fast using FedEx. (/u/LXL15[49] )
- The First Row[50] - semi ILLEGAL site to watch sports events, proceed at your own risk. Many sports events are available there. (DELETED)
- Pixlr Editor[51] - Basic picture editor that will irritate people using Photoshop, but its easy and free, and if I'm using a crappy computer without any software (like I am now) I'd go there. (/u/xCry0x[52] )
- Mint[53] - get your finances firmly under control. Downloads and categorizes transactions from your Debit and Credit accounts, and even tracks Mortgages and Car Loans. It allows you to set budgets for expenditures of certain types and then tracks those on a month-to-month basis and will nag you when you're spending too much on something. (/u/icyliquid[54] )

what movie is a complete mindfuck
Upstream Color - A woman is infected with a mind-control agent, and a bizarre lifecycle begins. Oblique, disturbing, romantic, and beautiful.
Pink Floyd: The Wall - Surreal extended music video with some freaky and beautiful animation.
Brazil - Creative and cynical dystopian satire with hallucinatory imagery.
Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) - Silent film with amazing Expressionist design. The first ever psychological thriller.
The Triplets of Belleville - Elderly woman must rescue her grandson from gangsters. Unique animated style, hilarious visual gags, and almost no dialogue.
Angel Heart - Private detective hired to track a missing person faces murders, cults, and questions he'd rather not answer. A twisted Neo-noir.
Microcosmos - Insects do insect stuff. Gorgeous photography and brooding atmosphere.
Waking Life - Man can't wake from a dream where he converses with strangers on cosmic and spiritual topics, rendered with eye-popping rotoscope animation.
A Scanner Darkly - Animated in a similar style, a cop in the near future investigates a drug dealer… himself. Mind-bending, contemplative, and totally captivating.
Coraline - Girl finds a door in the wall that leads to a version of her life where everything is wonderful… and not what it seems. Creepy and magical, with great stop-motion.
Cartoon Noir - Eclectic anthology of creepy animated shorts. Living mannequins, alien abductions, and enticing illusions abound.
Baron Munchausen - Playing with artifice and reality, this 18th century folktale is bursting with wild imagery, absurd humor, and sharp satire.
The Game - Wealthy, disaffected man joins a mysterious Game and finds the stakes all too real. Stylish, tense, and twisty.
The Conformist - Italian fascist agent is sent to assassinate his former teacher. Subtle and subversive, with dazzling cinematography.
The Ninth Gate - Rare book expert sent to verify an occult tome contends with sinister forces. Moody and mysterious.
Repulsion - Nervous, repressed woman starts to fall apart. Surreal and paranoid. Witness for the Prosecution - Veteran criminal lawyer takes a case with unseen complications. Funny, clever, and twisty.
Waltz with Bashir - Memories of the Israeli invasion of Lebanon visualized with sublime animation and somber reflection.
Heavenly Creatures - Two teenage girls in '50s New Zealand become romantically involved, with dire consequences. Vibrant and horrific.
Forbidden Planet - '50s spacefaring classic about a rescue mission that finds world-changing discoveries and terrible hidden power. A bit dated, but very cool.
Open Your Eyes - The original Spanish Vanilla Sky, and soooooo much better.
American Splendor - Giamatti kills it in this meta biopic of underground comics author Harvey Pekar.
Videodrome - Cronenberg's nightmarish mindfuck scifi of the VHS age.
The Pledge - A retiring detective goes to extreme lengths to catch a murderer. Challenging and unconventional.
Timecrimes - Spanish thriller / dark comedy about a chance encounter with a time machine and the unfortunate results. Impressive logical cohesion.
Ghost in the Shell - Beautifully animated future techno-thriller. Big influence on The Matrix.
Delicatessen - French dystopian dark comedy with cannibalism.
8 1/2 - Italian filmmaker reflects on his life and work through memories and fantasies.
Man on the Moon - Jim Carrey stars in biopic of Andy Kaufman, the ultimate troll.
Dark City: Director's Cut - DIRECTOR'S CUT, you hear me? The theatrical has opening narration that spoils the mystery. A dude wakes up with no memory and a dead hooker, and has to figure out what the fuck.
Enter the Void - Trip into the afterlife seen through the eyes of a young drug dealer. Gorgeous as can be, but a test of endurance.
The Fisher King - A guilt-wracked radio shock jock and a homeless would-be knight errant change each other's lives. Fun, moving, and surreal.
Triangle - A group of friends on a boat get knocked off course and encounter an abandoned cruise ship from which there is no escape. Mind-bending and horrific.
Barton Fink - A playwright is hired by a film studio and hits a mental block. Maybe his wacky neighbor can help! Or maybe everything is going to hell.
Paprika - Gorgeous anime about dream-hopping technology gone awry.
Perfect Blue - Same director as Paprika, but more of a psychological horror than sci-fi fantasy
Pi - A mathematician tries to crack the numeric codes behind human endeavors, and encounters more than he bargained for. Sharp, weird, and spooky.
The Fountain - In three disparate time periods, a man sets out to save a life, and confronts mortality and infinity.
Black Swan - A ballerina is pushed to the edge of sanity by the stress of her performance... or perhaps something more?
The Fall - An injured stuntman tells a young immigrant girl a story. Reality and fantasy are interwoven.
2001 - Basically THE mindfuck movie. It's slow, but the atmosphere and visuals are sublime.
